The System Physician Executive for the Community Health and Wellness Institute is a system-level executive role, responsible for setting the overall direction, strategic development and operational achievement of community health and wellness services while promoting the delivery of quality, compassionate and culturally competent services to individuals, families, groups and communities.  In addition, this position is expected to support and help implement population health and value-based care delivery capabilities.

  • Education: Medical Doctor Residency required. Graduate Degree preferred.
  • Experience:  10 Years experience, required.
  • Licensure/Certification: Board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Internal Medicine or Family Practice required.  Active, unrestricted active or ability to obtain a medical license in North Carolina as a Doctor of Medicine or a Doctor of Osteopathy, required.

Previous experience required in the following areas: 

  • Experience leading the business and clinical aspects of community medicine services (primary care and some other medical specialties) to include strategic planning, growth, provider  recruitment, accountability and alignment
  • Experience developing clinical protocols and pathways to yield reduced cost and improved clinical quality.
  • Experience preparing and managing administrative and clinical budgets for a community medicine program with profit-loss accountability.
  • Experience with care management, care coordination, utilization management, and quality performance to support performance in value-based care environment.
  • Successful experience managing external customer relationships (e.g., regulators, accreditation agencies, etc.) and physicians and other clinicians operating in a medical group.
  • Proven track record with tangible results in clinical quality improvement and cost management.
  • Ability to integrate clinical and financial data for improved management of clinical programs, clinic operational activities, and strategic growth planning.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a high-growth, high-performance culture


  • Collaborate with organizational leaders and manage interdependencies across divisions to provide patient care and services including development of patient care programs, establishment of standards of practice, policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for recruitment, retention and alignment of the Community Health and Wellness Institute and providing oversight and collaborative leadership for market leaders in the Community Health and Wellness Institute.
  • Participate with leaders from medical staff, medical group and institutes across all Novant Health markets in planning, prioritizing, promoting and conducting organization-wide assessment and improvement activities.
  • Prepare, oversee and manage administrative and clinical budgets and corresponding performance in partnership with operational finance with profit-loss accountability for the Community Health and Wellness Institute.
  • Responsible for promoting the organization’s deep commitment to patient experience.
  • Maintain processes for ongoing innovation and evolution for primary care delivery in a manner that supports and enables the organization’s commitment to value-based care performance.  
  • Act as an externally facing representative, and champion, in interactions with providers, payors, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor and support recruitment, training, engagement and retention.
  • Develop role-specific productivity standards and maintain systems to monitor individual and clinic performance for the institute.
  • Perform continuous quality improvement activities to ensure the ongoing quality and efficiency of health care delivery to patients.
  • Champion equity within the organization through supporting diverse team composition and through a focus on elements of the care model that target the needs of diverse and vulnerable patient populations.
