Abstracts and codes medical data at the Certified Hospital Coder III level. This   coder’s primary responsibilities are related to all inpatient accounts as assigned. The Certified Hospital Coder III- Trainee who enters the Coding Academy will be trained on how to perform the same functions as any other Certified Hospital Coder III would be expected to do. The staff who enter the coding academy will not be required to have the same experience, but after completion of the academy, the job functions would be the same. • Education: High school diploma required. The Certified Hospital Coder III (CHC III) team member who does not have experience, and the CHC III team member who does have experience, would be required to complete the Coding Academy. 
• Experience: Zero years of experience with RHIA or RHIT, or minimum of three years’ experience with acute inpatient, outpatient (acute or physician) coding with CCA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H, CPC-A, required.
• Licensure/certification/registration: See under experience for requirements.
• Additional Skills Required: There are three parts of the Coding Academy, and the training is broken out in to “Easy, Medium, and Hard” for the inpatient Coding Academy. Each training session (Easy, Medium, and Hard) takes about 2-3 weeks to complete and the team member will then be audited for accuracy and productivity on a Prebill basis until acceptable metrics are achieved by the team member or we are no longer able to keep auditing on a Prebill basis due to the record limit available for Prebill audits during the Coding Academy (inclusive of Easy, Medium, and Hard training sessions). The team member will have communication with their Production Supervisor around acceptable metrics and feedback when there is an opportunity to improve their accuracy and/or productivity. The CHC III team member should strive to progress to the next Coding Academy training session within 2-3 months of completing a training session, until they have progressed through all of the Easy, Medium, and Hard Coding Academy training sessions. Newly hired CHC III team members, will be required to successfully complete the Easy Coding Academy training and demonstrate accurate coding, in order to stay employed in this role. Failure to accurately code Easy inpatient types, 3-4 months after Coding Academy training, could result in termination or demotions (if other positions are available). While not required to complete all training sessions to stay employed, failure to successfully complete the Coding Academy for “Hard” inpatient accounts will result in the team member not being eligible for interdepartmental promotions until they are able to code all cases within their patient type. After completing all Easy, Medium, and Hard Coding Academy training sessions for inpatient coding and continuing to demonstrate accurate inpatient coding for all complexity of cases for one calendar year after completing the Hard training Coding Academy, a CHC III team member would be eligible for interdepartmental promotions at that time. NOTE: Failure to accurately code Easy inpatient types, 3-4 months after Coding Academy training, could result in termination or demotions (if other positions are available). While not required to complete all training sessions to stay employed, failure to successfully complete the Coding Academy for “Hard” inpatient accounts will result in the team member not being eligible for interdepartmental promotions until they are able to code all cases within their patient type. • Additional skills preferred: Data entry preferably through experience with EPIC and 3M Encoder software and Optum.
