Responsible for leading a centralized approach to nursing research and nursing professional development that is in partnership with nursing practice and senior leadership and reflects the values and mission of UVA Community Health. Director coordinates, manages and provides subject matter expertise in the development, design and implementation of nursing research projects across the health system. Provides leadership in management, education and consultation to support individual or teams in research projects that promote and advance the use of research-based practice. Provides leadership in the translation of research findings into nursing practice. Advance inter-professional research efforts through collaboration with multi-professional clinical experts and academic leaders. The Director oversees the Department of Nursing Education to maintain a Provider Unit status according to American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) standards that delivers highest quality continuing education for nurses. Identifies knowledge and skill gaps through an ongoing multi-faceted learning needs assessment approach. Establishes, maintains and oversees a systematic, theory-based approach to competency assessment for nurses. Oversees and maintains an accredited transition to practice program for new nurse graduates. Provides guidance and consultation in establishment of transition to practice programs for nurses new to the health system and those nurses transferring within the system to new roles including practice and management. Oversees an evidence based centralized new hire orientation program that incorporates classroom-based technologies and pedagogy that promotes competency and critical thinking. Communicates assessment outcomes, program outcomes and return on investment in educational and research services. Oversees and maintains standards for clinical student placement activities and rotations.

  • Education: Master's Degree in Science nursing, required.
  • Experience: Five years of experience in Nursing Professional Development or combination of academic education and nursing professional development, required. Five years of progressive leadership experience, requied.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current Virginia RN license, required.
  • Essential Duties: 
    • Assures an evidence-based multi-pronged approach to educational needs assessment.
    • Develops and oversees a competency assessment approach that guides both individual and area specific education and orientation plans to support effective orientation, lifelong learning, and patient safety.
    • Ensures compliance with accreditation standards and all other regulatory standards related to education impacting nursing staff.
    • Maintains an accredited transition to practice program for new graduate nurses.
    • Guide the establishment and maintenance of transition to practice programs for nurses as need forecasts.
    • Ensures nursing research aims and goals are in alignment of health system goals.
    • Guides the development of education activities related to research and dissemination of research finding.
    • Promote implementation science as a means for translation of research to nursing practice.
    • Develops departmental strategic plan and integrates, aligns, and synthesizes department plans with division and health system priorities.
    • Develops and maintains operating and personnel budgets for assigned programs and areas.
    • Integrates appropriate pedagogies and teaching methods for diverse learning needs in order to meet class and program learning objectives.
    • Responsible for expanded and enhanced use of computer assisted instruction and multi-media simulation learning approaches in addition to additional innovative teaching methodologies.
    • Serves as a liaison with schools of nursing where the organization’s nurses support academic practicum experiences and serve as preceptors, instructors, adjunct faculty or faculty. 
    • Provides for effective monitoring and financial management of educational program. Seeks and recommends potential opportunities for cost containment and analyzes trends that may impact cost effective delivery of educational programming.
    • Conducts evaluation and/or research to determine the effectiveness of staff education programs to meet desired clinical, service, people and cost outcomes.
    • Serves as a resource for educators across Patient Care Services and Service Lines.
    • Accurately forecasts and manages budget for the department and ensures adherence to budget.  
    • Develops and maintains effective communication to ensure the flow of information related to education and research to the patient care units and appropriate management staff. 
    • Maintains a Provider Unit according to American Nurses Credentialing Center standards. 
    • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
