Novant Health is looking for compassionate, caring Novant Health Inpatient Care Specialists (NHICS) - Medical Director to join our rapidly growing inpatient provider team, and we would love to speak with you about our opportunities. This role will be 90% clinical and 10% administrative.


As a NHICS Medical Director, Physician’s duties and obligations shall include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following:


  • Participate in the development of patient safety and quality initiatives, including mortality, readmissions, hospital acquired infections, patient experience, medical error prevention at home facility.
  • Participate on Facility and Corporate Committees as requested by NMG with deliverables, such as NHICS Council, Vizient Q&A Committee, Operations Excellence Committee, Patient Flow Committee, Clinical Variation Improvement Team, etc.
  • Responsibility for oversight of initiatives to attain NHICS budgetary goals with regard to expense and revenue within the home facility.
  • Develop best practice protocols, report on pertinent outcome parameters, and assist in NHICS team education regarding safety and quality, cost containment and decreased physician practice variation within the home facility.
  • Assist Novant leadership with strategic planning, business relationships, revenue enhancement, and other initiatives to extend the reach of NHICS services within Novant Health.
  • Assist in ongoing corporate compliance for all NHICS team physicians practicing with the Novant Health facility including but not limited to E&M training.
  • Direct the bi-annual review of NHICS physicians providing services within the Novant Health facility.
  • Direct patient and physician complaint resolution within the Novant Health facility.
  • Assist Novant Leadership in development and maintenance of NHICS provider compensation plans.
  • Assist Novant Leadership in establishing criteria for adding new providers to the NHICS team serving the Novant Health facility.
  • Assist in the recruitment of new providers to the NHICS team serving the Novant Health facility.
  • Recommend assignment of NHICS physicians practicing in the Novant Health facility to serve on all pertinent hospital and NMG committees.
  • Organize and chair periodic NHICS team meetings within the Novant Health facility.
  • Scheduling and payroll responsibilities within the Novant Health facility including, but not limited to, review and approval of all schedules prepared by the NHICS Unit Medical Director, Novant Health facility.
  • Participate in development of best practice model by diagnosis.
  • Partner with NMG and Medical Center Leadership;
  • Problem solve complex operations issues.
  • Initiate and champion process improvement efforts.
  • Build relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

  • Graduate of an accredited school of medicine required
  • Completion of an accredited residency program required
  • For specialty physicians - completion of an accredited fellowship program specific to medical specialty


  • Current MD license in appropriate state
  • Board certification or eligibility
  • Current DEA license required
