Location: Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, Salisbury, NC

Job Summary:

The Pre-Operative Nurse is responsible for providing nursing care to patients who are scheduled for surgery, ensuring that they are properly prepared for their procedure. The nurse will work collaboratively with the surgical team, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that the patient receives safe and effective care.

Qualifications

    • Current RN licensure in the state of North Carolina.
    • BSN degree or equivalent experience preferred.
    • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in a hospital setting, with experience in preoperative care preferred.
    • BLS certification required; ACLS and PALS certification preferred.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

    Physical Demands:

    This position requires the ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time. The nurse may be required to lift and move patients, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. The nurse must have the visual and auditory acuity to assess patient condition and respond to emergency situations.

    Work Environment:

    The Pre-Operative Nurse will work in a hospital setting and may be exposed to infectious diseases and hazardous materials. The nurse must follow standard precautions and infection control protocols to ensure a safe working environment. The nurse may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays based on patient care needs.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs preoperative assessments on patients to determine their health status and readiness for surgery.
  • Educates patients and their families about the surgical process and what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
  • Coordinates the patient's care with other members of the healthcare team, including the surgeon, anesthesia providers, and surgical technologists.
  • Administers medications and other treatments as prescribed by the physician.
  • Monitors the patient's vital signs and other physiological parameters during the preoperative period.
  • Ensures that the patient's medical history and other relevant information is documented accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment for the patient in the preoperative area.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities and other initiatives to improve patient care and safety.
