Overview

Under the direction of the Vice President Philanthropy, the Chief Philanthropy Officer is responsible for developing, organizing and managing all fundraising strategies and activities within the Novant Health Foundation market of responsibility. Each CPO will work toward an annual fundraising and activity goal determined by the President of the Foundation in conjunction with the business operations team. The CPO will be responsible for his/her own portfolio management resulting in revenue goal attainment. The CPO will lead a team of professionals who also manage a portfolio with best practices in moves management related to fundraising and revenue goals. Board cultivation and management is a critical piece of this role.

 

The Chief Philanthropy Officer develops and implements the comprehensive fundraising plan for the market of responsibility. Included in this is working with the hospital president to stay informed of priorities, developing the initiatives for support, philanthropy strategy and execution, portfolio segmentation, engagement events, and planned-giving related to revenue. The CPO is responsible for creating an environment to move giving from transactional to transformational. This person is also responsible for on-going stewardship of donors and institutional accountability for all gifts. Identifies, cultivates, and solicits major donors for gifts of $25,000 and over and leads a highly functional and eager fundraising team. Drives strategic alignment between the market’s Novant Health Foundation priorities and community needs.

Qualifications

Education: 4 year/Bachelor’s Degree, required. Business, Psychology, Communications, or related field. Graduate Degree MBA or MHA, preferred.

Experience: 7 years fundraising experience including Capital Campaign and Major Gift Solicitation or related experience. Experience managing a team and working with a Board of Directors, required. 5 years fundraising in healthcare environment, preferred.

 

Licensure/Certification/Registration: Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Leadership: Actively works with Philanthropy team to plan and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies and solicits gifts for Novant Health Foundation market of responsibility from various sources including individuals, foundations, and corporations. Leads identification of giving opportunities within the market, which includes, but is not limited to, both capital and programmatic needs. Leads major fundraising initiatives, including capital campaigns. Develops and implements the team member giving program within the Novant Health Foundation market of responsibility. Works closely with medical leadership to support gratitude from patients and caregivers.  Prioritizes proposals and may research, write and edit correspondence to current and prospective donors including introduction letters, gift acknowledgments and reports on the use of grant funds. Leads Foundation volunteer program and engagement strategies. Supports the Foundation Board of Directors and provides information on programming, development and governance issues. Maintains and provides appropriate documentation for audits and annual reports.
  • Communications: Creates an environment that supports and respects diversity to promote creative problem solving.
  • Business Acumen: Creates programs to educate donors on giving to health care and how philanthropy helps Novant Health achieve its goals. Represents the Novant Health Foundations across the system through formal and informal contact within the community and beyond. Maintains organizational policy and procedure, including rules of conduct.
  • Quality Improvement: Demonstrates knowledge of process improvement principles and applies appropriately to improvement activities.
  • Customer Service: Creates strategies and manages relationships with current and prospective major gift donors; facilitates meetings between current and prospective donors and Novant Health physicians, community physicians and leadership; plans strategy for prospect cultivation and donor engagement. Leads the identification and development of case statements representing product lines that match Novant Health priorities, working closely with system and medical leadership; works with appropriate staff to develop written case statements that match system priorities with donor interests for major gift solicitations from individuals, corporations and foundations. Manages a range of 50-150 prospects/donors depending on size of market team.
  • Human Resources: Manages day-to-day operations of the Novant Health Foundation’s Philanthropy team in market of responsibility. Develops and mentors an integrated, high-performance team, in which staff members work cooperatively and collaboratively. Promotes integration and sharing across teams and the department. Establishes a collaborative working relationship with system and market leadership.
  • Financial: Sets fundraising event strategy and oversees fundraising event execution. Analyzes and assesses return on investment for fundraising events. Responsible for the establishment, oversight and administration of budget.
