Overview

The Pharmacy Student will provide clinical and operational pharmacy services for assigned area(s), optimizing the quality of patient care under the supervision of a preceptor. The Pharmacy Student will be a self-directed, motivated learner as guided by intern program leaders and preceptors. Examples of major learning and development activities for the Pharmacy Student include: participate in key services such as vaccination programs, medication listing, discharge counseling, medication navigation and medication therapy management, provide education for pharmacists, technicians and other health care professionals regarding proper drug therapy, and conduct research and quality improvement projects. The Pharmacy Student provides pharmacy operations support to develop a well-rounded understanding of all aspects of pharmaceutical care within the hospital or community pharmacy settings. The Pharmacy Student acts in accordance with current policies and procedures. Appropriate and current state licensure and continuing education requirements must be completed prior to the start date and be active for the duration of employment. Able to work shifts consistent with the requirements outlined in the Novant Health Pharmacy Student Intern Program.

Qualifications

Education:
Essential:
* High School Diploma

 

Required - High School or GED Required 

Other Required: Active enrollment in an ACPE accredited School or College of Pharmacy

Preferred: Hospital or community pharmacy experience Preferred Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) Certification and/or NC BOP Registration Refer to the Life Support Training Policy NH-HR-3096. Licensure/Certification Type (ex NP, RN, CMA)

 

Required/Preferred Additional Skills/Requirements (required)

• Considerable knowledge and application of basic math skills, including ratio and proportion relationships; strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Basic technology skills. Other duties as outlined in Novant Health and facility specific policies and procedures. Ability to drive/travel to multiple facilities/locations as needed. Ability to work as part of a high performing, change ready and resilient team. Additional Skills/Requirements (preferred)

• Considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration, and adverse effects; the ability to demonstrate patient interview skills and strong written and verbal communication skills with other healthcare professionals. Experience with inventory management.

  1. Pharmaceutical care: Under the supervision of pharmacy preceptors, function as an active member of the distributive service line, gaining knowledge, experience, and skills in pharmacy operations. Provides immunizations and participates in vaccination workflows. Provides patient specific drug therapy monitoring and clinical pharmacy services to assigned patient areas, considering patient specific factors, such as age, clinical status, comorbidities, etc. Provides formal consultative services, rounding services, and clinical drug information to physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals within the medical team. Provides pharmacokinetic dosing for selected medications, including those with narrow therapeutic indexes. Facilitates the development and implementation of treatment guidelines, formulary changes, and critical pathways utilized in patient areas as assigned. Monitors and documents adverse drug events. Identifies methods, procedures, and systems which could be implemented to prevent/avoid adverse drug events.
  2.  Education and Training: Provides detailed, appropriate and relevant drug information to patients during or prior to discharge. Provides formal inservices and/or continuing education programs to pharmacists, technicians or other health care professionals. Enhances the skills of pharmacists and technicians by actively participating in staff development programs by serving as a pharmacy role model and resource. This may be accomplished by providing written or verbal communication, literature or other resources, inservices, journal club or assistance in daily activities. Provides enhancement of clinical skills and knowledge base of pharmacy students as applicable. 
  3. Projects/responsibilities: The pharmacy intern will participate in pharmacy related projects and presentations as assigned. 
  4. Human Resources: Provides staffing within the pharmacy department or vaccination clinic as scheduled. Responsible for the preparation and distribution of all medications. 
  5. Leadership: Participates in leadership activities as assigned during internship and staffing responsibilities by intern program directors. Completion of an administrative project as assigned. Participates in leadership discussions, seminars, or book clubs as they are available and assigned. 
  6. Quality Improvement: Contributes to quality and effective operations of the department. Focuses on process improvement and safety for service line while working on assigned rotations. Participates in all facility and corporate quality initiatives and quality improvement projects where assigned. 
  7. Able to work shifts consistent with the requirements outlined in the Novant Health Pharmacy Student Intern Program.
