The Residency Program Director and Lead Physician is responsible for overseeing the development and execution of the residency program at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center (NHPMC) and serves as the Lead Physician of the program faculty, residents and staff. The Program Director is responsible for the program maintaining substantial compliance with the ACGME program requirements. This person develops and executes strategic vision; fosters the culture with a focus on diversity, equity, accountability and quality of the clinical, educational and research activities; and as the Lead Physician works with administrative partners to promote alignment with the organization’s mission, vision and values.

Qualifications

Education: Medical Doctor Degree (MD,DO) Required

Experience: 3-5 years Must include specialty expertise and at least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience, or qualifications acceptable to the Review Committee required. 3-5 years Teaching and evaluation the adult learner required. 3-5 years Strong leadership skills and qualities. Proven ability in budget development and monitoring, quality improvement, problem solving, strategic planning and interpersonal skills. Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence required.

Licensure/Certification: Licensed in NC. Must maintain specialty certification and medical staff appointment required.

  1. Directly related experience leading a graduate medical education program and/or medical staff affairs/credentialing preferred.
  2. Knowledge and experience with Graduate Medical Education including ACGME program and institutional requirements.
  3. Experience with database management and the New Innovations residency management system is highly desirable.

Essential Functions

 

The Residency Program Director and Lead Physician has the following responsibilities:

 

  1. The Program Director and Lead Physician has the authority and accountability for the overall program, including compliance with all applicable program requirements and the oversight and performance of the faculty.
  2. Support existing faculty and recruiting new members.
  3. Support and encourage faculty development.
  4. Fosters a culture acceptance and promotes diversity, equity and inclusion.
  5. Be a role model of professionalism.
  6. Design and conduct the program in a fashion consistent with the needs of the community, the mission of Novant Health, and the mission of the program.
  7. Administer and maintain a learning environment conducive to educating the residents in each of the ACGME Competency domains.
  8. Oversee the process to evaluate program faculty members in the residency program education at least annually.
  9. Approve program faculty members for participation in the residency program education at all sites.
  10. Submit information required and requested by the DIO, GMEC, and ACGME.
  11. Oversee the recruitment of new resident applicants.
  12. Support an environment in which residents have the opportunity to raise concerns and provide feedback in a confidential manner as appropriate, without fear of intimidation or retaliation.
  13. Ensure the program’s compliance with Novant Health’s policies and procedures related to grievances and due process and when action is taken to suspend or dismiss, not to promote, or not to renew the appointment of a resident.
  14. Ensure the program’s compliance with Novant Health’s policies and procedures on employment and non-discrimination.
  15. Document verification of program completion for all graduating residents within 30 days.
  16. Provide verification of an individual resident’s completion upon the resident’s request, within 30 days.
  17. Obtain review and approval from the DIO before submitting information or requests to the ACGME, as required in the Institutional Requirements.
  18. Demonstrate commitment to the delivery of safe, quality, cost-effective, patient-centered care.
  19. Attend regularly scheduled meetings e.g. Clinical Sections, GMEC, grand rounds, faculty development, etc.
  20. Support medical education of other clinical learners.
  21. Work with NHPMC administration and administrative dyad on business related activities and strategic planning.
  22. Have the authority to monitor the supervision of residents by faculty members at all participating sites.
  23. Have the authority to remove faculty members from participation of the residency program at participating sites.
  24. Monitor resident duty hours in New Innovations assessing for reporting compliance and addressing duty hour violations.
  25. Monitor resident PTO and advise residents the effects that the leaves have on extension of residency training in compliance with board specialty requirements.
  26. Ensure Residency Program Coordinator complies with all duties in his/her role including all work within New Innovations.
  27. Participate in scholarly activity to advance the profession.
  28. Perform all other duties as assigned.
