  • Overview

    The Sport Psychologist is primarily responsible for three priorities within Novant Health Orthopedic Services: performance and consultation, clinical care, and service line clinical research and program development.

     

    Performance and Consultation

    • Consults with patients, athletes, and partnered teams to improve performance and psychological state
    • Develops programs to assist patients and athletes with goal setting, skill development, and performance
    • Assists patients and athletes to address issues related to stress, anxiety, depression, substance use and PTSD and to cope with the pressures of competition
    • Develops programs to help patients and athletes recover from injury, establish or maintain exercise programs, and to achieve desired outcomes through mental skills training

    Clinical Care

    • Addresses patient psychosocial factors in the care of both surgical and non-surgical orthopedic patients
    • Creates positive outcomes in patient care through psychological treatment of health issues
    • Maximizes health of patients and bolsters delivery of a remarkable patient experience
    • Identifies and addresses factors that impact patient adherence to post-op recommendations

    Service Line Clinical Research and Program Development

    • Completes research in the fields of sport psychology, mental health, sports medicine, & orthopedic surgery
    • Publishes articles, journals, studies, and other materials related to the sport psychology field
    • Provides leadership and oversight to grant-funded programs and processes within the service line
    • Serves as speaker and service line representative at businesses, national conferences, and athletic events

    Qualifications

    • Education: Ph.D./M.D./D.D.S. required. PhD, PsyD or EdD in clinical or counseling from an accredited college or university.
    • Experience: Minimum of one year professional experience under the direction of a licensed psychologist or board certified psychiatrist and 2+ years working with collegiate athletes
    • Proven ability to work in the field of Sport Psychology. Experience with program developing and management of grant-funded projects .
    • Licensure/Certification/Registration: Valid license to practice clinical psychology in North Carolina required.
    • Additional skills required: Knowledge of social service agencies, state regulations and APA standards as related to client treatment, patient rights and client/patient confidentiality.
    • Additional skills preferred: Previous clinical responsibilities to include psychological testing, diagnosis, crisis intervention, brief individual and group psychological testing techniques, administration and interpretation. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge, skills and abilities within multiple theoretical orientation. Patient centered focused. Experience working within a multidisciplinary team/medical setting.
